Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
